5 things to try when you’re feeling stuck
My creative focus has shifted back to writing, but it’s been slow going. I thought I’d share a few things that have helped me when I’ve felt stuck.
Nature. I’m a big believer in the power of a hike. Being in nature slows my mind’s endless chatter. It’s soothing and rejuvenating and never lets me down.
Movement. Walking, dancing, and taking a bike ride are my three favorite things to do to get my mind off of my work… and my mind inevitably returns to it, but in the best possible way (i.e. showing me the answer to my problems).
Other art forms. I find it humbling to dabble in art forms I’m not good at. And it reminds me how limitless and expansive art can be. If creating intimidates you, immersing yourself in another art form can be just as effective—attend a dance concert, visit an art museum, or read poetry.
Favorite artists. My favorite writers and musicians feed my soul. I find revisiting their work or listening to an interview about their creative process inspiring. (Here’s an interview I love with Zadie Smith on shame, rage, and writing.)
Treats. Just say yes to that fancy latte and the giant muffin. Okay, I’ll admit this won’t necessarily help you create, but it feels good to indulge. I’ll leave you with this masterpiece I devoured yesterday. (ICE CREAM NACHOS!)
